CVT Council Bios

Cynthia Burkholder, ARNP is a board certified as an Acute Care Nurse Practitioner since 2010. She specializes in cardiology. She has been working with an interventional cardiologist, Dr. Vijay Rajendran, since 2010. She splits her time managing patients in both the clinic and the hospital setting. She has been in nursing since 2000, graduating with an Associate’s Degree in Nursing from Clinton Community College. She went on to complete her Bachelor of Science in Nursing from the University of Iowa College of Nursing and then went on to receive her Master of Science degree at the University of Illinois at Chicago in 2010.

She has been a member of the American College of Cardiology since 2012.

Her professional interests include management of coronary artery disease and structural heart disease.



Shelly McGurk, ARNP works at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics as the supervisor for advanced practice providers in the hospitalist program. Her practice includes general cardiology and advanced therapies inpatient services, cardiology consultation service, and stress testing. Her nursing background includes critical care and cardiovascular lab experience.

Shelly received her Bachelor of Science in Nursing with honors from the University of Iowa. She attended Allen College in Waterloo and was awarded a Master’s of Science in Nursing and post graduate certification as an Acute Care Nurse Practitioner. She later completed her doctoral education with a capstone project developing a program for MRI in patients with implantable cardiac devices.

Shelly is Board Certified by the American Nurses Credentialing Center as an Acute Care Nurse Practitioner. She has been inducted into the nursing honor society, Sigma Theta Tau. She is a member of the Society of Hospital Medicine and serves as the Iowa Chapter membership director and was granted fellowship of hospital medicine in 2020. She received the 2017 SHM Iowa Chapter NP/PA Excellence award.

Shelly’s professional interests include quality improvement for cardiology populations. Her abstract, Stratification of Chest Pain Observation Patients Using the HEART Score to Safely Reduce Cardiac Testing, was presented at the Society of General Internal Medicine in 2019.
